Coatings for the Rathdrum Prairie: a sealed floor over a protected aquifer

Rathdrum’s drinking water comes from the Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer, which the city calls its sole source of potable water; the city runs five production wells. The Idaho DEQ says the aquifer sits under coarse gravel and cobbles, so contaminants can move downward easily. Nearby Coeur d’Alene’s NOAA normals show about 25.4 inches of precipitation a year and January lows near 26°F. Cold enough to push ice into the cracks. The Coeur d’Alene station, near 2,130 feet, records about 23 days a year with a low at or below 20°F, on top of roughly 120 days at or below 32°F. Water that has seeped into an open crack in a patio freezes in that cold, pries the crack wider as it expands, and drains out when it thaws, leaving more room for the next round. The Rathdrum patio in our Showcase had cracks and spalls, so they were repaired with polyurethane fillers before the polyurea basecoat and Penntek X-300 polyaspartic topcoat. Why a sealed floor makes sense on the prairie

This is our own reasoning rather than a regulation: oil, antifreeze and lawn chemicals that soak into bare concrete are harder to clean up, and DEQ describes the aquifer below as easily reached from the surface. A coated slab is non-porous, so spills sit on top where you can wipe them up. It does not replace proper disposal of chemicals.
